Course objective

This course introduces students to corpus linguistics, with particular emphases on its possible uses in the areas of lexicology and translation.

 

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students are capable of:

-          Describing what a corpus is and how to build a corpus for a given aim.

-          Synthetically define the basic concepts and terms of corpus linguistics: monolingual corpus; multilingual corpus; comparable corpora; parallel corpora; concordancer; concordancing; concordance line; word lists; types; tokens; TTR; collocation; colligation; semantic preference; semantic prosody; POS tagging.

-          Describing the four units of meaning by sorting and reading concordance lines.

-          Creating a word list and a keyword list using the Sketch Engine and AntConc.

-          Creating and sorting concordance lines in the Sketch Engine and AntConc.

-          Creating a corpus using the web-crawl feature of Sketch Engine.

-          Using corpus information for glossary making.

 

 

Way of organizing the students work

·         The students will be provided with PDFs summarizing the theoretical aspects of the course, and with PDFs with step-by-step procedures for the use of the software tools.

·         All the slides used during the lecture and practical classes will be made available to the students in PDF format.

·         During the practical classes the students will work in pairs and well as individually, depending on the given task.

 

 

Evaluation of learning outcomes

Assessment of learning outcomes will include an online written test focusing on the theoretical aspects of the course. The test will include multiple-choice questions, but also open-end questions asking students to apply some of knowledge acquired during the course.
